How is this different from “fractional CFO” or “fractional Head of Tax” offerings I see elsewhere?
Two things. First, our principal is currently in a live, sitting senior tax leadership role at a $15bn+ PE-backed multinational — so the thinking we bring is current, not what it looked like 5 years ago when the last practice job ended. Second, we’re a regulated firm (ACCA + CTA-led) — so you’re not relying on a lone operator with no professional backup.
Is my business big enough for OHT?
OHT typically starts to make sense when: (a) you have ongoing tax questions coming up weekly or more, (b) you’re too complex for pure compliance but too small for a full-time Head of Tax, (c) you’re facing a transaction or regime change (Pillar Two go-live, M&A, exit, cross-border expansion), or (d) your CFO is spending material time on tax when they should be on finance. If any of those apply, the Discovery Call is worth having.
What does the time commitment actually look like?
Essential OHT (AED 7,500/mo) is typically 1–2 days of senior adviser time per month, distributed across the standing call, board paper, sign-offs and ad hoc questions. Growth OHT (AED 15,000+) is typically 3–5 days. Enterprise OHT scales to effectively a part-time dedicated role. The engagement is defined by the deliverables, not by hours ticking.
Can you work alongside our existing accountant/auditor?
Yes — and we often do. OHT is a leadership and strategy layer that sits above the compliance work. Your existing accountant can keep doing bookkeeping and compliance; your auditor keeps doing audit; we handle the strategic tax piece and act as the single point of coordination. Many of our OHT clients keep the rest of their adviser stack unchanged.
What’s the notice period?
30 days, both sides. No annual tie-in, no exit fees. The relationship works because it adds value every month — not because you’re locked in. In practice, OHT engagements tend to last multiple years because the value compounds.
How does this handle my UK side if I have one?
Our UK practice at thetaxlead.co.uk is the same firm — same team, same name, Chartered Tax Adviser-led, ACCA-regulated. A single OHT retainer can cover UAE and UK simultaneously, with one person managing the group tax function across both regimes. One engagement, one invoice, no coordination gaps.
Will you attend our board meetings?
Yes — typically quarterly for Growth and Enterprise OHT, in person in Dubai or London where feasible, remote otherwise. Essential OHT includes written quarterly papers but not standing board attendance (added on request). Attendance of audit committee meetings is included in Enterprise.
What if we have a huge quarter (acquisition, restructure)?
The retainer scales. A big quarter — M&A due diligence, restructuring, Pillar Two go-live — typically moves you temporarily up a tier (e.g. Growth → Enterprise for 2–3 months), then back down. Agreed in writing in advance, no surprise bills.
Can we get Big-4 sign-off on specific issues through OHT?
Where it’s genuinely needed, yes — we coordinate specialist Big-4 or specialist counsel sign-off and manage the engagement, with the OHT retainer acting as the senior layer that keeps the overall position coherent. You pay the specialist fees at cost through us. Often clients find they need Big-4 much less once OHT is in place because the strategic questions get answered without reaching for a project.
How do we start?
Book a free Discovery Call. Typically with the CFO or founder. 20 minutes, confidential, no obligation. We’ll scope your tax posture, agree a 90-day priority list and send you a written retainer proposal within two business days. Signed retainer typically runs within another week, so you’re live inside two weeks total.
